Neither pants nor couch turned out to be racist, but Chinese translation program sucks

It?s not often that the world of fashion retail has any real scandal or controversy, but there?s a picture raging through Twitter and other social media of a pair of knock-off Abercrombie & Fitch pants that are described as ?nigger brown.? The source of this egregious error appears to be a Chinese translation program called Kingsoft that made this exact same error in 2007, when a Toronto couple bought a brown couch with the same racial slur in the colour description.

The racist product description appeared on the site abercrombie-and-fitchoutlet.com?both the pants and the site seem to have since been taken down?a knock-off of the popular American clothing retailer. The company operating this site may not have intended the error, but it behaved carelessly and the outcome was damaging. As for Kingsoft, it's been aware of the problem in its program for five years, and it seems to not have bothered getting around to fixing it:

A Chinese software company, Kingsoft Corp., acknowledged its translation program was at fault. When the Chinese characters for "dark brown" are typed into an older version of its Chinese-English translation software, the offensive description comes up. (The program's 2007 version does not produce that result.) The software had been programmed with terms garnered from a Chinese-English dictionary.

Algernon Austin: Blacks See Largest Decline in Health Insurance ...

Over the last decade, blacks experienced the largest decline in employer-sponsored health insurance coverage. If President Obama's Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) is revoked, as the Republican presidential candidates are calling for, blacks and all other groups will find it increasingly difficult to obtain health insurance.

From 2000 to 2010, the employer-sponsored health insurance coverage rate for black workers ages 18 to 64 years old dropped 8.6 percentage points. White and Hispanic workers also experienced health insurance declines, but somewhat smaller ones. Employer-sponsored health insurance coverage declined 6.3 percentage points for white workers and 6.6 percentage points for Hispanics. (Unless otherwise indicated, my employer-sponsored health insurance statistics are taken from my colleague Elise Gould's report, "A Decade of Declines in Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance Coverage.")

Children often receive health insurance coverage through their parents' work. Thus, it is not surprising that black children would see large declines in employer-sponsored health insurance coverage given the trend for their parents.

Like black workers, black children saw the largest decline in employer-sponsored health insurance coverage. Black children experienced a 14.1 percentage-point decline. For white and Latino children, the decline was 9.6 and 8.7 percentage points respectively. Most of these children who lost access to employer-sponsored health insurance were likely able to be covered by public insurance programs for children, but further detailed research on this point would be useful.

Since most workers obtain health insurance via work, the massive job losses of the Great Recession led to steep declines in health insurance coverage. However, it is important to note that the decline in health insurance began even before the Great Recession. As Paul Krugman has observed, even from 2003 to 2007, during the best years of the prior business cycle, health insurance coverage declined for workers. This fact is another indicator that the American economy has not been functioning well for average workers.

One piece of good news is the Affordable Care Act. Although we could have instituted more radical reforms like a Medicare-for-all program, the Act will likely go far in expanding health insurance coverage. The best evidence for this is the tiny uninsured population in Massachusetts. Massachusetts health care reform served as a template for the Affordable Care Act. In 2010, while 15.4 percent of the population nationally was uninsured, only 1.9 percent of Massachusetts residents were uninsured.

The main expansion of health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act will begin in 2014, but we have already seen one of its positive effects. In 2010, the Act made it possible for young adults up to 26 years old to be covered by their parents' health insurance policy. From 2009 to 2010, despite large job losses for young adult workers, their rate of health insurance coverage increased. They were the only age group that saw increases in health insurance coverage.

In countries with universal health insurance, jobs losses do not lead to losses of health insurance like they do in the United States. The large job losses that blacks have experienced since the start of the recession has also meant significant losses in health insurance coverage. But it is important to remember that even during the best years of the Bush Administration, blacks and all other workers were losing employer-sponsored health insurance coverage. Without a reform like the Affordable Care Act, the decline in health insurance coverage will continue in good times and bad.

whimsey99-The Manifesto | Lolarama @ Parsons

IF I WERE TO HAVE MY OWN EXHIBITION DESIGN FIRM?

PHILOSOPHY?

At whimsey99, we believe in genius. We believe in ideas and solutions that exceed simply ?being good?. We believe that there are always better solutions. We are here not only to spread ideas and solutions. We are here to spread love ? our love for stories, tools and the passion for what we do. Some works are reading glasses. They augment readers in clarifying what is not clear. We like to think of our works as magnifying glasses. Not only do our creations help to show things, they help to amplify beauty that already exists. It is our goal to make these magnifying glasses as elegant, effective and lasting as possible. We are here to show that we care. We care about our staff, your stories and everything in between.

?

PROJECTS & CLIENTS

whimsey99 houses a team of young artists and technologists who collaboratively work across the disciplines of graphic design (branding, publication and illustration), exhibition design, retail and showroom design. At whimsy99 we learn to appreciate all forms of design. We love hand-written calligraphy as much as cutting-edge mobile technologies. whimsey99 have been and will continue to work closely with clients from the arts, entertainment, retail industries as well as cultural institutions. We also hope to expand our practices into music and performance arts at a later stage. The majority of our media design projects intergrade visual design, technology with experimental architecture. We however seldom undertake standalone graphic design projects; our graphic designers assist us more in creating visuals, interfaces and promotional materials along with our media designs. What drives whimsey99 to work in these fields tirelessly is the excitement in seeing our ideas bounce off paper and continue to live and to be interpreted in another form in another space through many more eyes.

We believe that by specifically engaging ourselves in the uprising youth market will help shape and generate positive impacts on the future of the youth cultural scene. ?We appreciate clients who appreciate unconventional solutions.

Younger audiences accept, demand and are more adaptive to new spaces, systems and ideas, and perhaps in the process of doing so they will help us to see our works in a new light.

?

TECHNOLOGY, USERS AND CONTENT

We don?t find it an absolute necessity to use technology in every project. ?Not the most cutting-edge technology that is. If a piece of sticky note does the job better than a high-resolution touch table, we will not chose the later. We appreciate technologies that create the most awe in the least of efforts. We respect technology as an intelligent entity but we do not fear to exploit it smartly. We only employ technologies that we have control of, as we will need to take full responsibly of the ending impacts of the technologies we chose. We strive to make technologies we employ as open-ended as possible for the audience to enjoy, comprehend, explore and share.

SPECIALIZATION

whimsey99 specializes in creating awe-inspiring designs both visually and conceptually. We believe that all humans are visual animals. We all have a soft spot for visually enticing artifacts and spaces. ?The other two senses we are fond to attack on are hearing and touch. ?We believe that these basic human instincts are capable of creating meaningful communication just as effective as visual information. And of course for those who look beneath the surface we always offer extra layers of interpretation and interaction. In terms of interactivity, we always strive for a playful yet elegant outcome, unless the brief requires otherwise. We see being playful as one of the most powerful mechanisms to unleash one?s inner self, creativity and decision-making instincts. Admit it. It never hurts to be joyful. However there is a clear distinction between being playful and being childish. Being playful towards a piece of work usually requires a high level of participation, whether it is collaborative or solitary; temporary or long lasting. By participation we don?t simply mean poking or sliding fingers on a flat screen but the initiation of meaningful conversations and a sense of wanting to participate to learn about, explore or change something. Most important of all, it has to be genius.

?

FUTURE OF WHIMSEY99

Our short-term goal is to dip into the realm of stage design for concerts and theatres. We are greatly inspired by the incredible floating stages from the Bregenz Festival in Austria and its profound impact on performance arts. Stage design is in itself an art of creating the visual image through sets, costumes, lighting, and stage mechanisms. It is also a design discipline where your imaginations are only bound by what comes out of your head. In the long term, our ultimate goal is to open up a portion of our studio space to allow members of the public to come in, work, explore and collaborate, similar to the non-profit organization Eyebeam. We hope to host a fertile incubator for creativity and thought, where artists and technologists actively engage with culture, addressing the issues and concerns of our time. We are here to show that we care. We want to help and gather those who care too.

Apple TV (2012)

Two years later, and our Editors' Choice set-top box Apple TV ($99, 4 stars) is back, and it's new and improved. Those improvements are very, very slight, but they still count. The 2012 model is pretty much identical to the old one in size, shape, features, and its $99 (list) price tag. For a full rundown of every nook, cranny, and function of the Apple TV, our review of the last iteration of product still applies here. An overhauled iOS-like interface gives the Apple TV a fresh menu system, but that's available to last-gen Apple TV owners through a software update.?Still, the new model supports 1080p video and keeps its under-$100 price, so it retains its Editors' Choice crown.

Design
Physically identical to the last version, the new Apple TV is a tiny black, square puck measuring 0.9 by 3.9 by 3.9 inches (HWD) and weighing 9.6 ounces. The front panel shows a single white light indicating that the box is on, the top has a matte black finish with an Apple logo on it, and around back are connectors for the power cable, HDMI, microUSB, optical audio, and Ethernet. Even the remote is identical, a slight, simple silver wand with a navigation pad and play/pause and menu buttons. If you put the new Apple TV next to the previous one, you can't tell them apart.

The Apple TV uses the new iOS 5.1-based interface right out of the box. You can install the same interface on the old Apple TV, however, and get the same features and menus. Prior to receiving our review unit, we loaded the new Apple TV OS on our old Apple TV, and you can read our hands-on story for a closer look.

Getting Online
Setting up the new Apple TV was fast and easy. I just had to enter my language and Wi-Fi information, and I was into the main menu. Features like movies, TV, and music (and all other direct Apple services) require signing into the iTunes Store, but once that was set it was clear browsing. It's certainly an easier process than setting up a Roku box; I didn't have to activate anything through the Web. The new Apple TV interface even let me log into Netflix without hitting the Web. Simplicity is key here.

Video services include access to your iTunes libraries, Netflix, YouTube, Vimeo, and MLB.tv. It's a good selection, but Hulu Plus would really add to the device's functionality. Considering Apple sells most recent episodes over iTunes, though, the absence of Hulu makes sense.

Music encompasses both the massive iTunes library, including your own music ripped from CDs if you want to spend $24.99 per year on iTunes Match, and a full selection of podcasts and Internet radio stations. But you need to subscribe to iTunes Match if you want to listen to any of your purchased music on iTunes without a networked computer or an iOS device, even if your music library is purchased ?completely?through iTunes.

Connect Your iPad
iPad and iPhone integration is seamless, with videos and music streamed wirelessly through AirPlay to the Apple TV with just two taps of the screen. You can also use your iOS device as an Apple TV remote, which makes entering text when logging into accounts or searching for movies and music much easier thanks to the touch screen keyboard.

The only real difference between the new Apple TV and the old model is that the new one supports 1080p video and can output at that resolution. While you won't notice much of a difference if you have a smaller TV, if your HDTV can support 1080p and is larger than 40 inches, video will be crisper than its lower-resolution equivalent. This, however, depends on the quality of the content and your bandwidth. I watched a preview of "The Simpsons: Tapped Out" in 1080p and it looked clear and smooth. After that, I loaded a "Being Human" featurette during a dip in network performance and the video looked slightly blocky thanks to the compression. The 1080p support is great when your media can reach that level, but that won't always be certain.

If you already have an Apple TV from 2010 or you don't have a large 1080p HDTV, you don't need the new box. If you're new to the game, and want to stream all of your iTunes media and Netflix, the new Apple TV is a top choice. If you have an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, the benefits are even more apparent thanks to AirPlay support and the ability to use those devices as a remote. It still doesn't have a particularly large selection of non-Apple services, but a good-looking, dead-simple-to-use interface helps the Apple TV keep its Editors' Choice rating. If you don't want an Apple product and prefer more streaming media services over the iTunes library, consider the Roku 2 XS ($99, 3 stars) or the inexpensive Roku LT ($49, 4 stars). The Roku 2 XS offers 1080p output, and the Roku LT offers 720p video at half the price of the Apple TV.

How TwitchTV Built a Vibrant Community Around Game Streaming

If you?re ditching cable, there are many alternative content destinations online. If you?re a gamer, one of those is probably TwitchTV.

TwitchTV was started in June 2011 by Justin.tv founders Justin Kan and Emmett Shear. Since launch, TwitchTV has built an audience of 16 million visitors per month, with a growth rate of about 11% per month, according to Kan. Not only that, but those on the site stay and watch for an average of 47 minutes.

What are they watching? Usually, live broadcasts of gamers playing Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, or even classics like StarCraft, Halo and Street Fighter X Tekken.

Kan compares the rise in e-sport popularity to the rise of poker 20 years ago. While poker was a game many had enjoyed at home for years, the advent of cameras that could display the players? hands to the television audience turned it into a spectator sport. Similarly, gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry, and now the technology is allowing people to stream their own content and spectate more easily.

?Poker started to be shown on ESPN. We are the ESPN of e-sports,? Kan said.

?Don?t wait for someone to represent you. Start your own stream and get involved.?

TwitchTV differs from ESPN in that anyone with the right tools can stream their own content. Marcus Graham, better known as djWHEAT, has been streaming games to spectators for the last 10 years. He said TwitchTV has seen a rise in the number people of streaming games, from double-digits to an individual streamer with thousands of watchers. Not only that, he says gamers are learning they can make money from their streams ? sometimes enough to supplant a full-time job.

SEE ALSO: Move Over, Super Bowl. Spectator Gaming Reaches Millions Online

TwitchTV helps users monetize by allowing them to place ads in their streams. Kan said the advertising system was unique because streamers could place as many ads as they wanted in places that made sense with the content.

?I?m excited to be the ultimate level of tech entrepreneur. I set my own schedule and create my own content,? Graham said. ?Now so many other people realize they can do this, too.?

Graham said TwitchTV is working on tools that will make it even easier for gamers to share their content, and he hopes that the next-generation consoles will feature tools making it easier to stream games. It?s not only about the tools though; gamers running streams have to learn how to entertain, engage and capture a loyal audience.

TwitchTV offers its streamers tools to interact with their audience, most importantly a chat that runs on the right side of their stream. It?s the main way for the streaming audience to interact with what?s being broadcast, and with each other. Graham said people come into his chats to talk to each other as well as to be entertained. He also sees people drop in even if he?s not broadcasting just to chat about games.

He also said some popular content creators are allowing their TwitchTV subscribers to play matches against them on the stream.

?It?d be like if you were a huge basketball fan and got to play a game against Michael Jordan.?

Jared Rea, the community manager for TwitchTV, said interactions the players and audience have with each other are what allow the community to grow as a whole, even as they host such a varied amount of game content.

?Almost like San Francisco?s culture and community varies from block to block, TwitchTV?s community varies wildly,? said Rea. ?All the jokes in the fighting community are very different than the Minecraft community. But if you hang around, you?ll start to see a lot of familiar faces across communities.?

Rea?s job at TwitchTV, along with a whole community team, is to address and balance all the needs of this microcosm, as well as to surface the best content from each of them to feature on the main site.

?There?s a big push and pull sometimes between the casual and hardcore gamers, but at the end of the day I try to know as much about everything. I fight for the users,? said Rea, who is also a former game journalist and has been involved with the gaming culture for years.

TwitchTV?s explosive growth can be attributed to the strong community and the democratization of content creation ? it gives gamers a place to belong, said Rea. He said the common gamer mentality has always felt a little out of the mainstream.

?Don?t wait for someone to represent you. Start your own stream and get involved,? he said.

The user empowerment has helped TwitchTV expand rapidly. Graham called the growth ?astronomical,? and he doesn?t think it will be long before TwitchTV becomes more mainstream.

?I don?t even have to hope too hard in some cases,? he said. ?The numbers are attracting eyeballs that weren?t looking at us before.?

Some of those eyeballs are big commercial advertisers, said Kan. He said more brands than before are sponsoring shows and players, and there is an emergence of big networks like Major League Gaming.

Even with the rapid growth, Rea said those interested in becoming part of the TwitchTV community will find it welcoming.

Somali Shebab fighters kill six in Mogadishu attack

Somalia's Al-Qaeda allied Shebab insurgents fired mortars at the presidential palace in the capital overnight, killing six civilians in a camp for displaced people nearby.

The hardline Islamist group said its salvo of "midnight mortar attacks" were targeted at the palace, and boasted of killing African Union and government soldiers.

But AU force spokesman Paddy Ankunda said only civilians were killed, adding the shells missed the presidency by about 300 metres and hit one of the many crowded camps.

"A father, mother and two of their children have all died, after a mortar shell smashed into their hut, and another round killed two other civilians," said Abdiwahid Mohamed, a witness.

"People were sleeping when the mortar shells started falling, it killed a number of civilians at a camp near the presidential palace," said Colonel Bare Mohamed, a government security official.

The presidency -- guarded by a 10,000-strong AU force -- has come under several recent attacks, including a suicide bomber attack claimed by the Shebab that killed five people last week.

"It's the second attack on the presidential palace in a week, demonstrating the sheer impotence that is surrounding the weak apostate regime," the insurgents said in a message posted on Twitter.

"In every alley, every corner and every lane of Mogadishu, a mujahid (Islamist fighter) lies in wait for them," the rebels added.

Muktar Ali, another witness, said at least six mortar shells hit around the camp for displaced people in war-wracked Mogadishu and three inside. Seven other people were injured.

"We are burying the dead at a cemetery not far away from the camp," he added.

The hardline Islamists have resorted to guerrilla tactics after the majority abandoned fixed bases in Mogadishu in August in what the Shebab claimed was a tactical retreat but the AU mission said represented a military defeat.

The Shehab last month also lost control of their strategic base of Baidoa to Ethiopian troops and pro-government Somali forces, the second major loss in six months.

However, experts warn the Shebab are far from defeated and remain a major threat, especially now they have switched to guerrilla tactics.

The Shebab and other militia groups have tried to exploit the power vacuum in Somalia, which has had no effective central authority since plunging into war 21 years ago when president Mohamed Siad Barre was toppled.

In recent months however, the Shebab have faced increasing pressure from the armies of Somalia's neighbours.

Kenya sent its troops into southern Somalia to fight them last October, blaming the Shebab for the abductions of several foreigners. Its troops have now been incorporated into the AU force.

Ethiopian forces entered Somalia a month later in the west, as international diplomatic, military and relief efforts focus on ending the conflict in the south.

At a London conference last month, international powers pledged to boost aid for Somalia to tackle Islamist militancy, piracy and political instability, warning that failure to help could hurt the rest of the world.

The mandate of the government expires in August and the fragile administration's international backers have ruled out any further extension, pressing for the formation of a new administration that can impose nationwide authority.
