ATSC commences 3DTV standard development, better get your glasses ready

The Advanced Television Systems Committee recently commenced development of a 3D broadcast TV standard which would let legacy devices to receive 3D signals without blowing their tiny electronic minds. In a year's time, it's planning to have a completed rulebook, allowing for 3D broadcasts with left- and right-eye views in a single channel, also enabling mobile and non-real time delivery -- meaning you've got one less device to replace when you decide to make the switch to 3D. Whilst many of these standards already exist (and are in use) the ATSC is now looking to get everyone in North America singing from the same sheet. Now's about the time to invest in some better glasses.

Government tries harder to douse graft protests (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? The government on Tuesday stepped up efforts to end national anti-corruption protests led by the ailing 74-year-old social activist Anna Hazare as he entered a second week of fasting.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, under fire for failing to react to the biggest social protests in decades, wrote a personal letter to activist Anna Hazare and called for a meeting of political party leaders to try to end the impasse. A minister also met a Hazare aide for talks.

There were also reports that the finance minister -- one of the country's most experienced and powerful politicians -- was appointed to negotiate with leaders of the protests, but a spokesman for the prime minister denied this.

Self-styled Gandhian activist Hazare has lost nearly six kgs (13.2 lbs) since he began his fast to demand a bill for creating an autonomous anti-corruption agency, a campaign that has drawn support mainly from the middle class against Singh's government.

"Over the last few days, I have watched with increasing concern the state of your health," Singh wrote in a letter.

"At worst, our paths and methodologies may differ, though I do believe that even those differences have been exaggerated."

Hazare's protest prompted the government to introduce the bill into parliament in August, though his supporters have slammed the existing draft as toothless.

The bill is now parked with a parliamentary standing committee. The protesters want the government's draft bill withdrawn and their own version passed by the end of the month, a demand which senior government figures have said is unrealistic and undemocratic.

But in another attempt at compromise, Singh also said in the letter that Hazare's version of the bill could be also be discussed in parliament. There were also reports the government might yield to a key demand to include the prime minister in the

ombudsman's ambit.

Hazare remained lying or sitting on a public stage on open ground in the capital New Delhi for much of the day, surrounded by at least 10,000 supporters in the monsoon heat where open toilets and spilling waste were starting to cause outbreaks of food poisoning and illness.

"We made an attempt," Salman Khurshid, the Law Minister sent to talk with Hazare's team, told reporters after his meeting. "We didn't come with an agenda. So no outcome," he said, adding: "we are trying to understand what the excitement is about and we have heard many things that sadden us."

With key state elections next year that pave the way for a 2014 general election, the government must end a crisis that has paralysed policy making and parliament and added to Singh's unpopularity amid high inflation and corruption scams.

Many of India's middle class, the fastest growing population segment, have joined forces with Hazare to protest a system that requires bribes for everything from driver's licences to birth certificates and a series of graft scandals that have touched top politicians and businessmen in Asia's third largest economy.

By mid-afternoon on Tuesday, thousands had gathered in the muddy, water-logged protest ground in Delhi. As a popular actor led songs and chants on a stage, a large number of students were walking in a procession, or passing by in trucks, shouting anti-government slogans.

Hazare was sitting on a stage, seemingly enjoying the music and waving at the large crowd holding flags. Although visibly weaker, he tried to assure his followers about his health.

"People should continue with this struggle even if I'm not there," he said. "This is our second freedom struggle."

Hazare, who has carried out scores of hunger strikes over the last few decades to pressure governments, has been visited by Hindu gurus, former judges and Bollywood actors. But he has refused to have any politicians on his stage.

His deteriorating health could force the government to decide whether to force feed him -- a move that could spark further protests against a fumbling government of elderly ministers widely seen as out of touch.

"His health is weakening by the hour," Kiran Bedi, a former police officer and one of India's best known anti-graft campaigners who works with Hazare, told Reuters.

"But so far the doctors say he is not in danger."

A group of left and regional party members staged a sit in of parliament on Tuesday, one of two opposition party protests against the government this week. The main Hindu nationalist opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is organising a

nationwide protest against the government on Thursday.

Seeking to pile more pressure on Singh's coalition, the BJP on Tuesday slammed the government's version of the graft bill and called for its withdrawal.

Criticism of Hazare's hunger strike has also surfaced from activists and academics who say it is setting a bad precedent by holding democratic institutions hostage with his uncompromising stand. There have been criticisms from Muslim groups that he is

too close to radical Hindu groups.

Hazare was briefly jailed last Tuesday, a move the government sought to reverse quietly. But he refused to leave prison until the government allowed him to continue his vigil, in public, for 15 days. He was released on Friday to huge cheering crowds and widespread media coverage.

Several scandals, including a telecoms bribery scam that may have cost the government up to $39 billion, led to Hazare demanding anti-corruption measures. But the government bill creating an anti-graft ombudsman was criticised as too weak as it exempted the prime minister and the judiciary from probes.

97% Project Nim

All Critics (102) | Top Critics (25) | Fresh (99) | Rotten (3)

Marsh ... masterfully spins a harrowing tale of human arrogance that eventually gives way to cruelty bordering on the pathological.

Nim is as unforgettable as the treatment of him is unspeakable.

Like the experiment itself, "Project Nim" morphs from something inspiring and often humorous to a pointed and disturbing portrait of arrogance run amok. Greed and glory end up overriding decency and altruism, and it's heartbreaking to watch.

What makes this film especially engrossing is that what happened between that chimp and the humans with whom he spent his life in intimate contact turns out to be only half the story that Marsh, who directed the electrifying "Man on Wire," has to tell.

Marsh tells this story clearly and sympathetically, and he has the backlog of film and the witnesses to do so.

At times hilarious but ultimately heartbreaking, "Project Nim" is a great chronicle of the 1970s and all the nutty ideas that implies; academia in particular comes in for a hard reckoning.

After watching this eye-opening documentary, one almost hopes for a rebellion of the chimpanzees like the one seen in the latest installment in the Planet of the Apes franchise.

About as far as you can get from cin?ma v?rit? in its artful combination of archive material, existing documentary footage, newly filmed interviews and dramatic reconstruction, to trace Nim's strange progress.

Despite some heartbreak in the last half, this film brims with humanity and some priceless humour, too.

This many-faceted time capsule sheds little light, but buried inside it are vexing questions and the still-beating heart of a special creature.

Marsh, who made the multi-awarded Man on a Wire, takes no sides but lets the humans speak for themselves, rum lot that they are.

A corrective to all those family films and documentaries, many of them by Disney, that sentimentalise - and patronise - wild animals by trying to turn them into quirky, mentally subnormal humans.

Marsh's poignant film showcases the best and worst instincts of human nature and tells an extraordinary tale.

You end up fearing for the humans who contact him. At the same time, you feel his rage.

The chimp comes out of it well. Homo sapiens, of course, is found wanting.

In Project Nim Marsh is much less concerned with the scientific results of the study than he is with the behavior of the human beings involved, particularly Dr. Terrace whose behavior was, to put it mildly, not a credit to his species.

As a cinema experience, Project Nim was never likely to reach the heights of Marsh's Man on Wire, but the eccentricities of his story made it well worth telling.

One of the best documentaries of the year.

A documentary, stunningly watchable, about the 1970s American research team that explored the "educability" of a chimpanzee.

The saddest part is seeing him being given to a family with no expertise with animals or sign language and then having to adapt to too many different and increasingly restrictive types of lifestyles as he's moved from one place to another.

Intriguing yet ineffably sad, what emerges is not the story of an ape who failed to be human, but a story of human failings.

Nim's journey is profoundly moving...

You're left with the impression that, despite not being able to grasp basic human grammar, perhaps Nim was unwittingly conditioned into understanding the concept of love.

Gives us jolt of clarity into our 'playing God' actions, one filled initially with both hope then despair that ultimately makes you ashamed to be human.

MH Better Man Series - Sport Climbing Proficiency Level 1

safra MH Better Man Series Sport Climbing Proficiency Level 1 Course

Mens' Health Advert

This was an opportunity that was too hot to pass up, so this, is a short narrative on my first experiences of rock/sports climbing. The event was a promotion from Mens? Health Singapore, most probably to promote the climbing culture in Singapore, since, from todays briefing, sports climbing has been including the SEA Games, thus, the Singapore Sports Council has to follow suit and find qualified and adept climbers to bring in the gold. That?s just my thought anyway.

What startled me was the cost of the course; something that was originally priced at about $60 was now going for $15, even better than Groupon! Seeing as that I did miss the previous window to sign up for the course, I quickly informed Alif, and we both signed up for the course there and then.

Both myself and Alif got confused regarding the transportation to the place, as we were both West-staying people, we figured walking there would be the most, erm, simplified solution. Upon arriving, we managed to be pointed in the right direction but a person, whom later one would be one of the course instructors, Mr. Amir.

For the first half of part of the morning, it was mainly theory, such as top-rope climbing (the one we were using for the day), ATC and belay devices, harness, ropes, some knots? and that?s about it really. The real fun is of course, climbing the actual wall.

I can safely say I?m that bad at this first attempt. Perhaps I should have went for the inclined wall first, which was slightly easier, instead of cranking up for the face wall. After going through a few rounds of that, we went for a break, followed by a few more rounds. Subsequently we were led to the bouldering gym, where we were give a chance to try climbing without the safety harness, since the floor was all cushioned. Did a few rounds of those before I forearms eventually gave way.

Took a couple of photos with the group thanks to a Mens? Health Crew, which were present later in the day. Hope to find them later and post it up as soon as i see them.

On a side note, my leg still felt a little sore at the lower part of the ankle, around the joints. I do believe i can finally run now, as the posterior shin splint seem to have disappeared. But perhaps it would be wise to strengthen my Achilles tendon first before going on an about with running.

How to Become an Instant Local Marketing Authority | Local ...

This is a very common question and incredibly important for any of you starting out as local marketing consultants, or any other marketing niche for that matter.

There are effectively two main ways to instantly become an authority in your prospects eyes and they are:

1. Put on live speaking events such as workshops or seminars.
2. Write a book or have something published that gives you instant credibility.

Today we are going to look at the latter which is to write a book or have something published so that your prospects immediately recognize you as an authority in your marketplace; in this case local marketing.

Just think for a minute of what impact this has when you and your local marketing prospect your recently published book instead of just giving them a business card. Just imagine how much respect and credibility that gives you immediately.

I learned this lesson early on and focused very heavily on doing live workshops and seminars to quickly gain a massive amount of credibility and authority as a local marketing consultant. It worked magnificently and as soon as someone sees you presenting up on stage but I can?t help but feel ?you?re the guy?!

It?s the same with having a book published in the thing is here on not talking about writing a 300 page novel, I?m talking about something as simple as a 40 to 50 page e-book that you may already have that you can simply get printed and have a number of copies to give away to prospective clients.

In this Local Marketing Tips video I discuss those very points and show you my latest local marketing book that?s just been published.

Most people I speak to think that this must be difficult to get a book written, published and up for sale on Amazon, but it?s simply not the case these days.

First of all you don?t have to write the book your self you can get ghostwritten if you want to; in my case I wrote the book because I know the subject inside out and most of all I just wanted to do it.

There a many places that will publish can print books for you at a very very inexpensive price and it?s easy to get your book up on Amazon for sale which also shows people that you must be someone very noteworthy in the local marketing arena.

If you?re interested in finding out how this process works and how you can be a published local marketing author, then simply leave a comment below and based on those comments I?ll put together a how-to package for you.

I can?t stress how valuable this is so make sure you take this seriously and get stuck in that first book because I know you will be blown away by the response you get.

This is just another strategy to make local marketing much easier and be way ahead of the competition.
