WASHINGTON (AP) ? Tomas Vokoun blanked his former team with a 20-save performance, and the Washington Capitals beat the Florida Panthers 3-0 on Tuesday night to improve to 5-0, the best start in franchise history.
Marcus Johansson, Alexander Semin and Jason Chimera scored for the Capitals, who led 1-0 heading into the third period.
Washington and Detroit are the only NHL teams to win all their games thus far. The Capitals' four-game winning streak at home to start the season is also a club record.
Vokoun was rarely tested, but he couldn't afford a slip-up in a tightly played defensive struggle. It was the 45th NHL shutout for the 35-year-old goalie, who played the previous four seasons with Florida. He left for the Capitals after failing to reach a contract agreement with the Panthers over the summer.
Pressed into extensive action while Michal Neuvirth works to return from a foot injury, Vokoun improved to 4-0 this season.
Vokoun wasn't the only player matched up against his old team. Florida's Matt Bradley and Tomas Fleischmann are former Capitals, along with goaltender Jose Theodore, who watched from the bench for the first time this season.
Florida's Jacob Markstrom stopped 29 shots in his first NHL start, but was victimized by Johansson in the first period and by Semin at 1:49 of the third period. Chimera scored into an empty net.
That was more than enough to provide the Capitals with their first 5-0 start. Each of their previous four games were decided by one goal, and three of those went to overtime.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is expected to pull a procedural move Tuesday afternoon to sneak President Obama?s Commerce Secretary nominee John Bryson through Senate confirmation, The Daily Caller has learned.
The highly unusual maneuver will permit Reid to bypass the permanent Senate floor ?hold? placed on Bryson?s nomination by Oklahoma GOP Sen. James Inhofe ? a step he took because he objects to Bryson?s connection with a solar energy firm that received a $1.6 billion loan guarantee from the federal government.
Reid?s chosen procedural maneuver, called a ?time agreement,? circumvents the normal committee process by which presidential nominations are vetted. Should he succeed,?Inhofe would no longer be able to stop Bryson?s confirmation.
If Reid is able to move forward procedurally, Bryson?s confirmation could reach the Senate?floor on Tuesday afternoon. In that case, s simple 50-vote majority would confirm Bryson?s nomination ? meaning Democrats could simply slip him through.
Inhofe told The Daily Caller on Tuesday morning that he will meet with the Senate Republican leadership around noon today. He said he will ask Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and others to back his call for Reid to require a 60-vote threshold to confirm Bryson as the new Secretary of Commerce.
?We are going to tell the majority that in the event that they don?t agree to giving us a 60-vote threshold, and then go ahead and vote on the nomination, then we will go ahead and object to the motion to proceed ? and go through all these arduous things and a filibuster ? and then ultimately they?ll have to do a 60-vote margin anyway,? Inhofe said in a phone interview.
The conservative stalwart from Oklahoma added that if he wins the GOP leadership?s support, Reid can either concede the issue and hold a 60-member majority vote, or fight back and ultimately lose.
?I?ll find out later today if the Republicans in the conference agree with me,? Inhofe told TheDc.
As the ranking Republican member of the Senate Environment and Public Works committee, Inhofe has held up Bryson?s nomination for reasons other than those of some GOP colleagues. Other Republicans pushed for the Obama administration to first complete three free-trade agreements, which have recently been finalized. Inhofe, however, considers Bryson?s history troubling enough to hold him up.
Bryson, the former CEO of Edison International, was also chairman of the board of BrightSource Energy, a solar energy startup that received one of the biggest government-backed loan guarantees ever ? a $1.6 billion guarantee to build a solar energy facility in California.
?With Solyndra right now, and everyone talking about that, this is no time to have someone who has also had a similar type of loan guarantee that Solyndra got,? Inhofe told TheDC.
Bryson was also a co-founder of the National Resources Defense Council, a left-leaning ?environmentalist organization.??He isn?t just a supporter of it,? Inhofe emphasized. ?He helped found it.?
Inhofe also said Bryson could not possibly affect the economy in a positive way as Commerce Secretary.??Why have a guy as Secretary of Commerce who?s against commerce?? Inhofe asked. Bryson opposes drilling for fossil fuels and hydrofracking natural gas deposits, the senator said, and wants to rely ?solely on green energy where the technology does not exist yet.?
Bryson?s nomination was approved on October 6 by the Senate Committee on?Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
Neither Reid?s office nor McConnell?s staff?responded to The Daily Caller?s request for comment.

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas -- Historic drought conditions are fueling the largest algae bloom in more than a decade along the Texas Gulf Coast, killing fish, sparking warnings about beach conditions and making throats scratchy, researchers said Monday.
The extent of the so-called red tide bloom came as no surprise to biologists because the microscopic algae love warm, salty water. Since March, Texas has recorded seven of the 10 driest months in 116 years, so scientists had anticipated a red tide.
Earlier this summer, Texas Parks and Wildlife marine biologist Meridith Byrd said she hosted a meeting of researchers to discuss how best to respond.
"People have gone back and looked through the weather patterns and records and noted that red tides tended to occur in dry years." Byrd said.
In a wet year, when plenty of freshwater is flowing into Texas bays from rivers the salinity levels stay lower and stop any red tide that might try to encroach from deeper in the Gulf of Mexico, she said. That hasn't been the case this year.
The geographic scope of this red tide ? affecting areas from Galveston to South Padre Island ? is the largest since 2000, Byrd said from her office in Victoria. A variety of dead fish have been reported washing up in places since last month ? including a 6-foot tarpon on Padre Island this weekend, but so far this bloom hasn't produced a fish kill as severe as others, Byrd said.
Brigette Goza, a researcher at the University of Texas-Pan American Coastal Studies Lab in South Padre Island, said she was feeling the effects of the bloom's aerosol for the first time. On Monday, she had found her highest concentration of the algae cells since she began monitoring the bloom Sept. 11 ? 10,000 cells in one milliliter of water at the south end of the island, she said.
Even that concentration paled in comparison to a sample Tony Reisinger tested Saturday farther up the beach where the water turned red.
Reisinger, Texas AgriLife extension agent for coastal and marine resources in Cameron County, found more than 100,000 cells in one milliliter, he said. He began training naturalists along the coast this summer to do the cell counts.
The Cameron County health department warned people with respiratory illnesses, including asthma, to avoid South Padre Island and Boca Chica beach Sunday until further notice. The last red tide along the Texas coast was 2009.
A day at the beach in South Padre Island was not for the faint of heart this weekend. As soon as the car door opened the tickle in the back of the throat began, followed by a cough.
Still, cyclists competed during an otherwise beautiful weekend in road races and a triathlon called King of the Causeway.
"I don't think it was a huge issue," said race director Wally Alaniz, owner of a McAllen bike shop. "There was a bit of coughing."
Mostly competitors were relieved when they heard their coughs weren't a sign that they were coming down with a cold, he said.
Rains and wind are needed to knock down the bloom though the algae are tough.
"Until we get a significant weather change this thing is going to hang around and get pushed up and down the beaches," Byrd said.

LAS VEGAS ? As a driver, Sam Schmidt understood the inherent danger of driving a car at more than 200 mph. Even after a practice crash left him in a wheelchair, he accepted the this-is-part-of-it perils that go along with racing.
After watching Dan Wheldon's death punctuate an emotionally draining month, Schmidt may have had enough.
Speaking Monday from his go-kart facility not far from the Las Vegas Strip, Schmidt acknowledged that Dan Wheldon's death at Las Vegas Motor Speedway had left him shaken ? maybe even enough to leave the sport he loves.
"I'd by lying if I said I wasn't ? you've got to think about it," Schmidt said. "It's one thing to take the risk yourself and my situation, it's something I was doing since I was 5 years old and I'm still here to watch my kids grow up. It's an amazing parallel between Dan's age and my age when I got hurt and the ages of his kids.
"I just don't know if I can be this tightly associated with something like that in the future."
Schmidt knows a bit about adversity.
A rising star in the IndyCar series, he became a quadriplegic following a 2001 practice-session wreck near Orlando, Fla. Instead of folding his hand, the Las Vegas transplant instead used the cards he was dealt to start his own racing team.
Sam Schmidt Motorsports has been hugely successful in Indy Lights, winning five series titles, and this season in IndyCar ? its first as a full-time team in the series ? earned the pole at the Indianapolis 500 with Alex Tagliani. Sam Schmidt Motorsports also supplied Wheldon's winning car at the Indianapolis 500 last May for Bryan Herta Autosport.
The past month, though, has been trying for Schmidt and his team.
It started on Sept. 12, when Indy Lights team manager Chris Griffis died after collapsing during a pickup basketball game.
The team got an emotional lift when Josef Newgarden drove to the team's fifth Indy Lights title at Kentucky two weeks ago, and again when Victor Carbone drove to his first race victory at Las Vegas on Saturday.
The joy didn't last a day.
Starting from the back of the field as part of a $5 million promotion, Wheldon had moved up to the middle of the pack when cars started crashing all around him. Unable to avoid what would become a 15-car melee, Wheldon got caught up and his car went sailing over another vehicle and whirled into a catch fence, where it landed cockpit-first and burst into flames.
Wheldon was airlifted to the hospital and declared dead about two hours later from what the Clark County coroner said Monday was blunt head trauma. The 33-year-old Englishman was survived by a wife and two kids under 3.
"It's been a roller coaster," Schmidt said. "We lost a team member five weeks ago and we're still kind of reeling in that. Winning the championship in Kentucky really kind of uplifted the guys' spirits over that, then come here and have this happen. It's pretty trying.
"I'm generally a positive guy, silver lining and everything, but I haven't been able to find a silver lining lately."
Wheldon had teamed up with Schmidt for the chance at a $5 million promotion being offered by IndyCar to any non-full-time driver who could win the race. Wheldon and the team did a warmup race at Kentucky, finishing 14th, and had to start at the back of the field for Sunday's race as part of the promotion.
The partnership came to a disturbing end with the crash that left Wheldon dead and Schmidt devastated.
"I still feel like I'm in a state of shock," he said.

Florida will see more heavy rain and strong winds, while the Great Lakes and Midwest experience scattered showers Sunday.
A low pressure area over the northwestern Caribbean and southern Gulf of Mexico continues to trigger heavy rains, strong winds and dangerous surf from the Yucatan Peninsula across Cuba and into Florida and the Bahamas. This system has lingered over the region for a few days, raising the threat of flooding, landslides and mudslides in some areas.
Rainfall totals across Florida are expected to range from 2 to 4 inches on Sunday. This area of low pressure remains under a 20 percent chance of developing into a tropical cyclone.
Meanwhile in the North, a low pressure trough developed as it moved off the northern Rockies and will continue moving eastward, over the Upper Midwest and into the Great Lakes and Midwest on Sunday. This system will trigger scattered showers with a few possible thunderstorms, but severe storms are not anticipated.
To the south of the trough, a ridge of high pressure dominates from the southern and central Rockies and on across the central and southern Plains into the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states. This system ensures another warm and sunny day across the southern U.S.
Temperatures will range 10 to 20 degrees above seasonable for the central Rockies and central Plains, with highs reaching into the 70s and 80s. Temperatures ranged Saturday in the lower 48 states from a morning low of 24 degrees at Gunnison, Colo., to a high of 96 degrees at Phoenix, Ariz.

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) ? Herman Cain is firing up the crowd at a tea party rally in this West Tennessee town when the generator powering his sound system shudders to a halt.
Cain stands awkwardly for a few moments then suddenly begins to sing. Slowly at first but gaining in speed, he belts out "Impossible Dream" in the rich baritone he's honed in church choir.
"You know, when it's your rally, you can do what you want to do!" Cain says as he finishes with a raucous laugh. The 500 or so supporters who have jammed the strip mall parking lot to hear the Republican Party's newest star speak roar their approval.
Momentum restored, Cain launches into a pitch for his signature 9-9-9 tax plan, and the crowd is right there with him, chanting 9-9-9 along with the Georgia businessman.
The 65-year-old's improbable campaign for the presidency is all about momentum right now. How does he maintain the wave he's riding in recent polls that have catapulted him from an also-ran in the GOP race to the elite top tier?
There are many reasons his bid could fade as quickly as it rose. He acknowledged Friday that he will trail former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Gov. Rick Perry significantly in fundraising. Cain has never held elected office and could wilt under the rigors of the campaign trail and the withering scrutiny coming his way.
But Cain's moment is right now, and the former Godfather's pizza chief executive is marketing himself with practiced skill, banking on his charisma and the notion that the messenger is as important as the message.
His everyman image is resonating.
"In the field right now, he's the most like me," said Jimmy Hoppers, a 60-year-old physician from Jackson, who was hoping to meet Cain so he could hand deliver a $1,000 donation to his campaign. "He's run a business and paid the bills. He's authentic."
On Friday night Cain, who is African-American, drew about 2,000 people ? some in workshirts and overalls and nearly all white ? to a feed barn in rural Waverly, Tenn.
This is a socially conservative country and Cain ? ever the salesman ? knows his audience. He closes by invoking God and singing the hymn "He Looked Beyond My Faults."
"I love him," gushed truck driver James Bland after Cain spoke. "He doesn't talk down to you. I think he gets the working man."
"And it makes me so happy that he's put God back into things," chimed in Bland's wife, Karen.
In a year of anti-government fervor, Cain is casting himself as the anti-politician Main Street candidate who would bring common-sense business know-how to the bureaucratic thick of Washington. The former conservative radio show host is brash and straight-talking, saying that "stupid people are ruining America." He mimics liberals with a high-pitched whiny voice.
"Well, he doesn't have foreign policy experience," he says to laughs. "And the guy we have in there now does?"
Cain doesn't ignore the race issue, saying that some critics have called him "a racist" and an "Oreo" for leaving the "Democrat plantation."
"I have grown up telling it like it is and I am going to continue to tell it like it is," he said at a campaign rally in a suburb of Memphis, where he was born. "I don't talk politician."
Voters are responding
He drew large and enthusiastic crowds Friday as he kicked off a two-day bus tour in Tennessee, hopscotching to a trio of tea party events across the state.
Tea party activists make up the backbone of Cain's support and he speaks their language fluently. "My fellow patriots," he begins some sentences. References to freedom and liberty pepper his remarks.
He dives into an anecdote about the Constitution and takes a jab at President Barack Obama.
"You know what? I kinda like my guns and my Bible," he says.
And at every turn, he stresses his business background, noting that at a recent debate fellow Republican candidates dismissed his 9-9-9 tax plan as politically dead on arrival.
"Politicians put together things that will pass. Businessmen put together plans that solve the problems," he said.
Indeed, Cain's 9-9-9 plan seems to have put him on the map.
Following the rally in Jackson, Cain bolted off the stage and shook hands with onlookers, including Linda Fowler-Cole, who had wandered over after a shopping trip to Lowe's and was wearing a T-shirt with an oversized picture of Obama
"I heard the 9-9-9 guy was here and I came to take a look," the Democrat said. "I like Obama, but that 9-9-9 is catchy."
In Bartlett, Tenn., Cain drew a number of black supporters who were excited at the prospect of a conservative African-American of his stature.
"To me he represents what Martin Luther King was talking about when he talked about his dream," Reginald Tooley, a 49-year-old physical therapist from Memphis, said. "With hard work and self-reliance you can do anything you want."
Cain says he has been buoyed by support from regular folks.
"You just don't know how much this encourages me, the fact that you all came out tonight," he said in Waverly.
"You see, this is what the folks in D.C. don't get because they don't come out here to meet with you."
