(AP) ? Police drove hundreds of anti-Wall Street demonstrators from weeks-old encampments in Portland and arrested more than 50 of them, as authorities in Oakland, Calif., warned Occupy campers that a similar crackdown was coming.

Portland police moved in shortly before noon Sunday and forced protesters into the street after dozens remained in the camp in defiance city officials. Mayor Sam Adams had ordered that the camp shut down Saturday at midnight, citing unhealthy conditions and the encampment's attraction of drug users and thieves.

More than 50 protesters were arrested in the police action, but officers did not use tear gas, rubber bullets or other so-called non-lethal weapons, police said.

After the police raid, the number of demonstrators swelled throughout the afternoon. By early evening, dozens of officers brandishing nightsticks stood shoulder-to-shoulder to hold the protesters back. Authorities retreated and protesters broke the standoff by marching through the streets.

Demonstrators regrouped several blocks away, where they broke into small groups to discuss their future. The Oregonian reported that numbers began to thin out by mid-evening.

In Oakland, city officials warned protesters for the third time in three days that they do not have the right to camp in the plaza in front of City Hall and face immediate arrest. Police did not respond to requests for comment on whether officers were preparing to forcibly clear the camp.

Protesters said the main plaza was abuzz with rumors of imminent police action, and campers were discussing what to do and how to safeguard those who decided to stay.

"Oakland is not afraid. We're not afraid of our tents being taken away, of the movement being stymied," said Shon Kae, who is part of the group's media team.

The warnings were similar to those issued before officers raided the encampment on Oct. 25 with tear gas and bean bag projectiles. More than 80 people were arrested.

A day later, Mayor Jean Quan allowed protesters to reclaim the disbanded site after facing criticism for her handling of the city's response, as protesters highlighted that an Iraq War veteran had suffered a serious head injury during the police raid.

On Sunday, friends confirmed that the veteran, Scott Olsen, has been released from the hospital. Olsen, who suffered a skull fracture, became a rallying point for protesters nationwide.

Dottie Guy of Iraq Veterans Against the War said Sunday Olsen was released last week. He can now read and write, but still has trouble talking, she added.

The camp has grown substantially since the Oct. 25 raid, although city officials said on Sunday the number of tents has dropped by about 30 to 150 since Nov. 8.

Officials across the country have been urging an end to similar gatherings in the wake of three deaths in different cities, including two by gunfire.

Demands for Oakland protesters to pack up increased after a man was shot and killed Thursday near the encampment site.

Protesters had said that there was no connection between the shooting and the camp. But police Sunday night identified the slain man as 25-year-old Kayode Ola Foster of Oakland, saying his family confirmed he had been staying at the plaza.

Police officer Johnna Watson said witnesses have told police that one of two suspects in the shooting had also been a frequent resident at the plaza. The suspects are being sought and their names haven't been released.

Investigators suspect that the shooting resulted from a fight between two groups of men.

In the hours after the midnight Saturday eviction deadline in Portland, the anti-Wall Street protesters and their supporters had flooded the park area. At one point, the crowd swelled to thousands. As dawn arrived, riot police had retreated and most of the crowds had gone home, but protesters who have been at the two parks since Oct. 6 were still there, prompting one organizer to declare the night a victory for the movement.

"We stood up to state power," Jim Oliver told The Associated Press.

It didn't last. Police moved in later. An officer on a loudspeaker warned that anyone who resisted risked arrest and "may also be subject to chemical agents and impact weapons." Demonstrators chanted "we are a peaceful protest."

"We were talking about what we were going to do and then they just started hitting people. Seems like a waste of resources to me," protester Mike Swain, 27, told the AP.

One man was taken away on a stretcher; he was alert and talking to paramedics, and raised a peace sign to fellow protesters, who responded with cheers.

Choya Adkison, 30, said police moved in after giving demonstrators a false sense of calm. They thought they had time to rest, relax and regroup, she said

City officials erected temporary chain-link fences with barbed wire at the top around three adjacent downtown parks, choking off access for demonstrators as parks officials cleaned up.

Police Chief Mike Reese told KGW-TV it was his plan to take the parks in a peaceful manner and that's what happened.

"Our officers have performed exceptionally well," he said.

Mayor Sam Adams Sunday defended his order to clear the park, saying it is his job to enforce the law and keep the peace. "This is not a game," Adams said.

Officials said that one officer suffered minor injuries. Police had prepared for a possible clash, warning that dozens of anarchists may be planning a confrontation with authorities.

In other cities over the weekend:

? In Salt Lake City, police arrested 19 people Saturday when protesters refused to leave a park a day after a man as found dead inside his tent at the encampment.

? In Albany, N.Y., police arrested 24 Occupy Albany protesters after they defied an 11 p.m. curfew in a state-owned park.

? In Denver, authorities arrested four people as they forced protesters to leave a downtown encampment.

? In San Francisco, police said two demonstrators attacked two police officers in separate incidents during a march, leaving them with minor injuries. The assailants couldn't be located.

T-Mobile May Headline Google Music Event On Wednesday

tmobileinvite-1Last week, we got an invite for a mysterious Google press event that's being held in Los Angeles this Wednesday. The event didn't give any details as to what we could expect, but it's widely believed to feature the launch of an improved version of Google Music. And the invitation also contained another clue: an image of a warehouse that includes a small T-Mobile sign, among other things. Now we've just received a second invitation ? this time to "Experience The World of T-Mobile & Google", complete with guest appearances by several big-name music artists Drake, Maroon 5, Busta Rhymes, Dirty South, and R3HAB. This is obviously the after-party (it starts at 9PM, while the other invite is for 2PM). But the fact that T-Mobile is featured so prominently seems to indicate that it will play a major part in the news earlier in the day as well.

Liberia's Sirleaf: getting down to business (Reuters)

MONROVIA (Reuters) ? Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is hardly celebrating her impending election victory that secures her a second term in office as Liberia's president.

"What's there to smile about?" she said, posing for a photograph in the presidential office on Friday just before the election commission results gave her an unassailable lead. "It just means there's work to be done."

The Nobel Peace laureate, whose landslide win was marred by violence and an opposition boycott, has set ambitious targets for her second term.

It will start with an effort to reconcile with an angry opposition and end with a 50 percent reduction in poverty, years of double-digit economic growth, and job creation on the back of investment in Liberia's resources, she said.

The task is huge. Liberia still bears the scars of 14 years of intermittent civil war that claimed nearly a quarter of a million lives. Few people have access to electricity or running water, and more than half the population lives on less than 50 cents a day.

But the foundation is there, she said.

"The general prosperity of Liberians and the living conditions of Liberians will be sharply enhanced by the end of my next and last term," she told Reuters in an interview.

"We've already done all it takes to build the foundation for that, and now is delivery time."

Johnson-Sirleaf became Africa's first freely elected female head of state after winning elections in 2005 and has won international plaudits for maintaining peace and slashing the country's debt burden during her first term.

But her critics have said the pace of rebuilding the country from its 1989-2003 conflict has been too slow and that she has neglected the nation's poorest, including its thousands of former fighters.

The criticisms grew harsher after security forces cracked down on an opposition protest on the eve of the vote, killing at least two people.

The vote was also marred by an opposition boycott in protest over alleged fraud in the first round, which may have contributed to a less than 40 percent turnout in the run-off.

TOUGH START

Johnson-Sirleaf denied the violence and low turnout in the election was a threat to her ability to govern in her second term.

"I think my credibility has been established over many years. What it does, is it did undermine the country's victory," she said.

"The support I got from the elections demonstrated to me that I still carry a lot of popular support and I still have the confidence of the people."

"My task initially will be a bit harder because I now have to reach out to many of those who, particularly young people, may feel disaffected and may feel marginalized. But I intend to do that, to reach out to them to understand some of their needs and concerns and to respond to it," she said.

Her efforts to reunite the country will include reconciling with rival political leaders -- including, potentially, her chief rival, former U.N. ambassador Winston Tubman, who called the boycott of the second round.

"He has to first accept the election results. Then we go from there," she said.

Tubman told Reuters on Saturday that it was his party's position that he will not recognize Johnson-Sirleaf as president or work with her, but added his party planned to review its position soon.

"If, hypothetically, Madame Sirleaf decides to try to reconcile with my party, I will not block that," he said.

Johnson-Sirleaf said she would seek to create new jobs in the short-term with public works projects and would aim to develop longer-term jobs by supporting vocational training aimed at employment in the minerals and agricultural sectors.

Liberia's top export industry is rubber, but international mining companies have been drawn to its vast iron ore reserves. ArcelorMittal, the world's biggest steel maker, started iron ore output from Liberia in September - the first company to do so since the end of the war in 2003.

"Many of those young men, many are ex-combatants, many have been child soldiers, many have been bypassed on their education and their skills. That's what we have to address." she said.

The government was also in the process of reviewing revenue management laws for the resources sector but she stressed the changes would not necessarily alter the contracts of firms already operating in the country.

"We will respect the sanctity of contract," she said.

Resources development, including potential oil projects offshore, will drive robust economic growth, help fund badly needed infrastructure projects and form the backbone for new employment, she said.

"I will maintain our double-digit growth rates. I will build a lot of infrastructure, paved roads - more neighborhood roads and market roads," she said.

"I'm confident that the benefits of our natural resources will show results in terms of improving the lives of our people," she said.

Joe Paterno to Retire from Penn State, Expresses Remorse Over Role in Sexual Abuse Scandal

No one thought it would end this way for Joe Paterno: the iconic Penn State football coach has announced his retirement, effective at the end of this season, due to the ongoing sex scandal surrounding the university's athletic department.

Joe Paterno Pic

In 2002, Paterno learned that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky may have abused a boy in a locker room shower, but only reported the incident to the athletic director, as opposed to the police.

"I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief," the record-breaking coach state in a statement, adding:

"I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.

This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

The song's the thing for Swift, Perry at CMAs

(AP) ? Though still largely the domain of men, triumphs by Taylor Swift and The Band Perry at the Country Music Association Awards show that the young women of country music are finding their voices and shoving the boys out of the way.

Swift won the CMA's entertainer of the year for the second time Wednesday night, Kimberly Perry of sibling act The Band Perry took home song of the year and two other awards with her brothers, Neil and Reid. Add in wins by Miranda Lambert, Lady Antebellum and Sugarland, and the songwriting strength of today's country girls is undeniable.

"When Taylor won entertainer I secretly sang (Beyonce's) 'Who runs the world? Girls,' to Blake," Lambert said after she and husband Blake Shelton repeated as male and female vocalist of the year. "I'm just really happy that females are starting to be very prominent and it is the female singer-songwriter.

"It's so cool that Kimberly wrote song of the year by herself. And that's a dream of mine. I'm just so happy the girls were really celebrated tonight."

Celebrated like rarely before. Swift became the second woman to win entertainer of the year twice, joining Barbara Mandrell, and she did it by the age of 21.

"To win it twice is like the coolest thing ever happening to me twice," Swift said backstage. "I'm freaking out right now."

She's inspired legions of young girls to take up guitar and write their own songs, and she has spread the gospel of country music to the Far East, filling stadiums like few others can. She crossed the 20 million mark in album sales and has almost no rival in the genre when it comes to bringing converts over the wall.

She's made all that headway on the strength of her songs. She loves nothing better than the process of turning inspiration into something that makes a connection with people all over the planet.

"All of the sudden this idea that was just yours is now everybody else's and they sing it in their cars and sing it about their breakups or falling in love and they incorporate it into their lives," Swift said.

Perry experienced a similar kind of revelation when her song "If I Die Young" conquered country radio then began to crossover on to pop stations. Rarely do country songs resonate across genres, and that the melancholy "If I Die Young" ran hard in the face of the successful formula so many follow made it even more impressive.

The song earned Perry song of the year, which goes to the writer, and The Band Perry, which includes her brothers, single of the year and new artist of the year.

Perry said the song came to her one afternoon and she got most of it down right away. She showed it to her mom and said she thought she'd bring it to Nashville to get help from another songwriter to finish it, but her mother encouraged her to keep ownership. It turned out to be the right choice.

"We sort of feel like we are part of the country evangelism scene and we love to hear country songs on pop radio," she said.

Crossing over was another strong theme of the night.

Jason Aldean, who earned his first major CMA award when his platinum-selling "My Kinda Party" won album of the year, also won musical event of the year for his duet "Don't You Wanna Stay" with pop star Kelly Clarkson. And Kenny Chesney won music video of the year for his duet "You and Tequila" with rocker Grace Potter.

Lady Antebellum, whose crossover appeal is rivaled only by Swift's, won its third straight vocal group of the year award and Sugarland took vocal duo of the year for the fifth straight time.

That theme also carried over to the stage where stars from different genres came together for some of the CMA's strongest performances. The show also featured plenty of sexy dancing, fire and belching smoke special effects and, at one point, acrobats spinning down from the ceiling on lengths of unspooling fabric.

Lionel Richie had every star buzzing on the red carpet before performing duets from his new country album with Rascal Flatts, Darius Rucker and Little Big Town. He posed for a picture with Lambert and gave advice to Lady Antebellum on the red carpet.

Gregg Allman joined fellow Peach State natives Zac Brown Band on "Georgia on my Mind," Natasha Bedingfield, in a dress that featured a fluffy red skirt, joined Rascal Flatts on stage to perform their duet "Easy," and that was just the start of genre shuffling.

Shelton and Kenny Loggins opened the show with a high-energy version of Loggins' hit "Footloose." Later, Glen Campbell, one of country's biggest crossover pioneers who is now battling Alzheimer's disease, was given a musical tribute when Vince Gill, Keith Urban and Brad Paisley sang three of his songs.

Richie hadn't performed on the CMAs since 1986 when he appeared with Alabama. He noted the show has changed dramatically over the decades, as has country music.

"It's Cirque de Soleil ... it's full-on production," Richie said. "This is off-the-chain. This is the Oscars of the music business, the CMAs."

Lambert and Shelton made a little history when they took male and female vocalist of the year. They're the second married couple to win the awards in the same year.

"Congrats to my hubby, too," Lambert shouted from the stage to Shelton on the eve of her 28th birthday. "It's going to be a good night tonight, baby!" The camera cut to Shelton, who rubbed his hands together and smiled devilishly.
